What are the 2023 NEC GFCI requirements for non-dwelling locations?
Overview
Certain locations and applications require receptacles to be used in environments with challenges such as moisture and damp conditions, which can result in ground faults that are difficult to detect or disconnect using traditional methods. Section 210.8(B) of the NEC mandates GFCI protection for receptacles located in indoor areas other than dwellings. The 2023 edition of the NEC expanded this section to include new locations such as beverage preparation areas, buffet serving areas, and spaces near aquariums, aquatic containers, and vessels. These additional locations must now have GFCI devices installed to prevent electrical hazards, enhancing electrical safety.
Applying the 2023 Code
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection is a crucial safety measure designed to prevent electrical shock by quickly disconnecting power when it detects a ground fault. This protection is especially vital in environments where electricity and water may come into contact. GFCIs monitor the flow of electricity and trip the circuit if an imbalance occurs, reducing the risk of electrical shock and fire.
Section 210.8(B) of the NEC specifies that GFCI protection is required for certain receptacles in indoor locations other than dwellings. This includes receptacles rated 125-volt through 250-volt on single-phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to ground, 50 amperes or less, and those supplied by three-phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to ground, 100 amperes or less. The 2020 NEC version listed 12 specific locations where GFCI protection is required, including bathrooms, kitchens, rooftops, outdoor areas, sinks, indoor damp/wet locations, locker rooms with showering facilities, garages, crawl spaces at or below grade level, unfinished basement areas, laundry areas, and areas near bathtubs or shower stalls. The 2023 version expanded this list to include additional areas such as sinks with permanent provisions for beverage preparation or cooking, like those found in coffee shops and bars; buffet serving areas with permanent provisions for food or beverage serving or cooking, such as hotel breakfast areas; and locations within 6 feet of aquariums, bait wells, and similar aquatic vessels. These additional locations present unique electrical hazards that require specific safety measures. This change aims to enhance electrical safety by preventing electrical shocks and equipment damage.
What’s New for the 2023 NEC?
The table below presents a comparison between the 2020 NEC and the 2023 NEC regarding Section 210.8(B).

210.8(B) Other Than Dwelling Units
All 125-volt through 250-volt receptacles supplied by single-phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to ground, 50 amperes or less, and all receptacles supplied by three-phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to ground, 100 amperes or less, installed in the locations specified in 210.8(B)(1) through (B)(12) shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel. (1) Bathrooms (2) Kitchens or areas with a sink and permanent provisions for either food preparation or cooking (3) Rooftops (4) Outdoors (5) Sinks — where receptacles are installed within 1.8 m (6 ft) from the top inside edge of the bowl of the sink (6) Indoor damp and wet locations (7) Locker rooms with associated showering facilities (8) Garages, accessory buildings, service bays, and similar areas other than vehicle exhibition halls and showrooms (9) Crawl spaces — at or below grade level (10) Unfinished areas of basements (11) Laundry areas (12) Bathtubs and shower stalls — where receptacles are installed within 1.8 m (6 ft) of the outside edge of the bathtub or shower stall |
