How to perform load calculations for marinas in the 2023 NEC?
Overview
Due to the complex nature of the National Electrical Code, proper code layout and organization is critical for usability. The Correlating Committee and the Standards Counsel determined that Code Making Panel 2 (CMP-2), which is responsible for Article 220, is also responsible for all load calculations. Because of this determination, all of the requirements of Section 555.6 in the 2020 NEC have been moved to Section 220.120 in the 2023 NEC. These sections contain all of the load calculation and demand factor requirements for marinas, boatyards, floating buildings, and commercial and noncommercial docking facilities.
Applying the 2023 Code
The requirements that resided in Section 555.6 in the 2020 NEC have been moved to Section 220.120 in the 2023 NEC. This section contains all of the load/demand factor requirements pertaining to marinas, boatyards, floating buildings, and commercial and noncommercial docking facilities. Furthermore, Table 555.6 has been relocated to Table 220.120, and contains all of the actual demand factor values. None of the requirements for load calculations or demand factors have changed; this update is simply a relocation of existing requirements. This change was made to simplify the layout of the NEC by placing all load calculations and demand factors for marinas, boatyards, floating buildings, and commercial and noncommercial docking facilities within the article that primarily contains this information. Moving forward, the electrical professional will need to be aware that this information has been relocated in the 2023 NEC, but none of the requirements have changed.
What’s New for the 2023 NEC?
2020 NEC
In the 2020 NEC Section 220.120 did not exist.
2023 NEC
In the 2023 NEC Section 220.120 now reads as follows (less the informational note, and the table):
General lighting and other loads in marinas, boatyards, floating buildings, and commercial and noncommercial docking facilities shall be calculated in accordance with Part III of this article and, in addition, the demand factors set forth in Table 220.120 shall be permitted for each service or feeder circuit supplying receptacles that provide shore power for boats. These calculations shall be permitted to be modified as indicated in Notes (1) and (2) of Table 220.120. Where demand factors of Table 220.120 are applied, the demand factor specified in 220.61(B) shall not be permitted.
