Kentucky – Electrical Safety NFPA 70E (Part 1)

Course description

Covers the 2024 edition of NFPA 70E, beginning with the purpose and scope stated in Article 90, the definitions in Article 100, and the employer and employee responsibilities in Article 105. Participants examine the elements of an electrical safety program under Sections 110.2 and 110.3, job safety planning and job briefings, training requirements for qualified and unqualified persons, the selection and use of test instruments under Section 110.6, and the priority of establishing an electrically safe work condition.

The course then addresses lockout/tagout under Article 120, including the distinction between simple and complex procedures in Section 120.5, the de-energization sequence in Section 120.6, verification of the absence of voltage, and the energized electrical work permit. Later lessons cover shock and arc flash risk assessment under Sections 130.4 and 130.5, approach and arc flash boundaries, arc-rated clothing and protective equipment, and safety-related maintenance for switchgear, panelboards, motor control centers, fuses, circuit breakers, and battery rooms.

Learning objectives

• Describe the elements of an electrical safety program required by Sections 110.2 and 110.3, and the job briefing requirements of Subdivision 110.3(I).
• Apply the lockout/tagout requirements of Article 120, including the de-energization sequence and verification of the absence of voltage under Subdivision 120.6(7).
• Determine shock approach boundaries and the arc flash boundary using Sections 130.4 and 130.7.
• Select arc-rated clothing and protective equipment under Subdivision 130.5(F) and Table 130.7(C)(15)(c), and locate the safety-related maintenance requirements in Articles 205 through 320.
