California Electrician Continuing Education Requirements

California Electrician Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
License Type	Continuing Education Requirements	Expiration Date
Certified Electrician (Includes General, Residential, Fire/Life/Safety Technician, Voice Data Video Technician, and Non-Residential Lighting Technician)	32 hours of continuing education must be completed within the 3-year certification period. Courses must be taken from a curriculum provider approved by the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR). At least half of the required hours (16 hours) must be on the National Electrical Code (NEC). The remaining hours can cover other relevant electrical coursework. Proof of completion must be submitted with the renewal application.	Certification is valid for 3 years from the date of issuance.
C-10 Electrical Contractor (Licensed by the Contractors State License Board – CSLB)	None. The CSLB does not currently mandate continuing education for the renewal of a C-10 Electrical Contractor license. License renewal is primarily based on paying fees and maintaining a valid bond and workers’ compensation insurance (if applicable).	An active license expires every 2 years. An inactive license expires every 4 years.
Electrician Trainee (Registered with the DIR)	No specific CE hours are required. However, to be eligible for renewal, a trainee must demonstrate continued enrollment and attendance in a DIR-approved electrician training program. Renewal is contingent upon remaining in good standing with the approved school.	Registration must be renewed annually, by August 31st of each year.
