This course, NEC 2026: Theory and Calculations, has been approved by the Mississippi State Board Of Contractors for 2 hours of continuing education credit.
Course description
Covers changes in the 2026 National Electrical Code that bear on electrical theory and circuit calculations, beginning with the Article 110 general requirements: available fault current coordination in 110.10, arc-flash marking in 110.16, fault current field marking in 110.24, and working space for DC systems in 110.26. Participants then examine the two new Chapter 1 articles, Article 120 dwelling unit load calculations and Article 130 energy management systems and power control systems.
The course addresses branch-circuit requirements in Article 210, including conductor sizing in 210.19, GFCI protection in 210.8, AFCI revisions in 210.12 and receptacle placement in 210.52, followed by overcurrent protection and arc energy reduction in Articles 240 and 242. Later modules cover conductor sizing and grounding calculations for medium-voltage and high-voltage systems in the new Articles 268 and 270, equipment grounding conductor sizing in 250.122, and the revised ampacities in Table 310.16.
Learning objectives
- Identify changes in Article 110 for available fault current, arc-flash marking and working space for DC systems.
- Calculate dwelling unit loads under new Article 120 and size branch-circuit conductors under 210.19.
- Size equipment grounding conductors and grounding electrode conductors under 250.122 and new Article 270 for systems over 1000 volts AC and 1500 volts DC.
- Apply GFCI, AFCI and surge protection requirements from Articles 210, 215 and 242 to dwelling and service installations.
