Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How many continuing education (CE) hours are required for electricians in Utah to renew their license?

Licensed Master, Journeyman, Residential Master, and Residential Journeyman electricians in Utah are required to complete 16 hours of continuing education every two-year renewal cycle. The license renewal deadline is November 30th of even-numbered years.

What specific topics must be covered in my 16 hours of CE?

The 16 required hours must be broken down into 12 hours of 'Core' education and 4 hours of 'Professional' education. Core hours must cover the currently adopted National Electrical Code (NEC). Professional hours can cover topics such as job site safety, business practices, Utah electrical laws and rules, or other industry-related subjects.

Where can I find a list of approved CE providers for Utah electricians?

The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) provides a list of all approved continuing education providers and courses on their official website. It is the licensee's responsibility to ensure the course they take is approved by DOPL before completing it.

Can I carry over extra CE hours to the next renewal period?

No. The Utah Administrative Code for electricians (R156-55b-304) states that a licensee may not carry over any continuing education hours from one renewal period to another. You must complete the full 16-hour requirement within each specific two-year cycle.

What happens if I don’t complete my required CE by the renewal deadline?

If you fail to complete and report the required 16 hours of CE by the November 30th deadline, your license will expire. You will not be able to legally perform electrical work until your license is reinstated. Reinstatement typically requires completing all deficient CE hours and paying late renewal fees.
