Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How many continuing education (CE) hours are required for Montana electricians and how often?

Licensed electricians in Montana are required to complete 16 hours of continuing education every two-year renewal cycle. At least 8 of these 16 hours must be specifically on National Electrical Code (NEC) updates. New graduates of approved apprenticeship programs are exempt from continuing education requirements for the first renewal cycle. However, licensees advancing from journeyman or residential to a higher level of licensure are not exempt from completing the required hours of continuing education.

What is the deadline for completing CE and renewing my license?

The license renewal deadline for Master, Journeyman, and Residential electricians is July 1st of every even-numbered year. All 16 hours of required CE must be completed before this date to be eligible for renewal.

What information is required on a continuing education certificate for Montana electricians?

Course completion certificates should contain the licensee’s name, the course title, the date, and a breakdown of the course content (NEC or industry) by credit hour.

Upon completing a course with ExpertCE, you are immediately issued a certificate that fully complies with all Montana state requirements.

Do I need to retain the continuing education course completion certificate (s)?

Yes, licensees are responsible for maintaining records of completion and submitting certificates to the Montana State Electrical Board upon request.
