CE Requirement – Texas Electricians
Texas Electrician Continuing Education Requirements: All Texas-licensed Electricians must complete 4 hours of Continuing Education (CE) from a state-approved provider during each annual license period before they may renew their license. The coursework must cover specific topics including the National Electrical Code (NEC), Texas electrical laws and rules, and electrical safety.
Quick Steps to Renew Your Texas Electrician License
Complete a 4-hour state-approved CE course within your one-year license term.
Your course provider reports your completion to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) electronically.
Receive a certificate of completion from your provider and keep it for your records.
Complete the renewal application and pay the fee online via the TDLR website once your CE is posted.
Who Needs to Complete CE?
The following Texas Electrician license types require 4 hours of CE for renewal:
Important Notes
- Your license is valid for one year and must be renewed annually.
- CE courses must be completed within the term of the license being renewed.
- The 4 hours of coursework must cover the National Electrical Code (NEC), Texas Electrician Law (Occupations Code, Chapter 1305), Texas Electrician Administrative Rules (16 TAC, Chapter 73), and Electrical Safety (NFPA 70E).
- Electrical Apprentices may choose to be enrolled in a TDLR-registered apprenticeship training program in lieu of the 4-hour CE course.
- Electrical Contractors and Residential Appliance Installers are not required to complete continuing education for renewal.
- If you hold multiple electrical licenses, you are only required to complete the 4-hour CE requirement once per renewal period.
- You must retain a copy of your course completion certificate for one year after the completion date.
