In 1908, Ford rolled out the Model T, and plenty of stable owners gave it a long look and a short answer. Cars were loud, they scared the livestock, and you could not fix one with a bucket of oats. Twenty years later, the ones who did fine had learned to sell gasoline.

Electrical contracting is having its own horse and car moment right now, and the new engine is artificial intelligence. Before anyone panics: no AI is going to fish wire through a 1950s plaster wall, crawl under a house in July, or talk a homeowner out of “just one more outlet” on a fixed price job. The tools, the trade knowledge, and the license are still yours.

What AI is changing is everything around the wire. Estimating, purchasing, invoices, plan review, scheduling, and the paperwork that follows you home every night. The part of the job that nobody got into the trade to do is exactly the part AI is getting good at.

A new wave of AI products is already showing up on the electrical side of the business, and a few of them stand out. Here is what they do, in plain words, and where each one fits.

Datagrid: AI agents that actually read the spec book

Datagrid, now a Procore company, gives you AI “agents” instead of one tool, each trained for a chore. One searches across specs, drawings, RFIs, and submittals and answers your question with a citation. One cross checks submittals against specs and contracts to help flag compliance gaps. One drafts RFIs. One turns field photos, emails, video, and voice into a daily log.

Datagrid describes itself as built for the enterprise, so it fits larger project teams better than the two truck shop. But if you are an electrical sub on commercial work, you live inside those same submittals and RFIs, and anything that cuts the back and forth is welcome. Datagrid cites Level 10 Construction processing 10 submittals in one hour, saving 12 hours of work. Your project manager just felt a single tear of joy.

Electric Ease: an estimator that counts receptacles without counting sheep

Image: Electric Ease, electric-ease.com

Electric Ease is estimating software built specifically for electrical contractors, and version 2.0 leans hard into AI. Of the bunch, it is the one built most squarely around the electrical trade.

It has four main pieces. CrossCheck reads through plans and specs and points out the items that need your attention, which is handy when the spec book is thicker than the phone book used to be. QuantumCount speeds up repetitive symbol counting on electrical plans, so you are not on sheet E4.07 at midnight muttering “four hundred twelve, four hundred thirteen.” Bid Assistant puts estimating answers and context right inside the bid, along with the document sources behind them. And the connected workflow pulls assemblies, material, labor, expenses, and vendor quotes into one estimate, so you can review it and prepare the proposal.

The site describes QuantumCount as speeding things up “while keeping the estimator in control.” Good. The AI counts; you still decide what the job is worth.

Remarcable: the purchasing department that never loses a packing slip

Image: Remarcable, remarcable.com

Remarcable is a procurement and material operations platform built for electrical, mechanical, and plumbing contractors. Think of it as the place where field requests, supplier quotes, purchase orders, deliveries, tools, and inventory all live together instead of in six inboxes and a pickup truck dashboard.

Its AI layer, called Remarcable Intelligence, is where things get interesting. Scan a text, an email, or a handwritten note, even the kind written on the back of a sandwich wrapper, and it becomes a bill of material in the cart. Its catalog learns what contractors order together and suggests complementary items, with recommendations tuned to how your company orders, so you are less likely to get the panel and forget the breakers. On the back end, it checks each invoice line against the purchase order and flags what is not right, with a review step you control.

If you have ever been billed a higher unit price than you were quoted, you already understand why invoice matching is worth real money. Remarcable says more than 550 discrepancies are auto flagged every month, and that it is trusted by 40 percent of the top 50 US electrical contractors.

On the supplier side, distributors connect their own systems and catalogs, so orders flow in without someone retyping them. Fewer fat finger errors on both ends of the counter.

ServiceTitan: the whole shop in one app

Image: ServiceTitan, servicetitan.com

ServiceTitan is a big all in one platform for residential, commercial, and construction contractors, and it has a page just for electrical shops. Scheduling, dispatch, multi option proposals, invoicing, phased billing, job costing, inventory, maintenance agreements, marketing, and a mobile app for the techs. It connects to QuickBooks, so your bookkeeper might even start returning your calls.

On the AI side, ServiceTitan offers Titan Intelligence, which it calls AI for the trades, and an AI virtual agent that answers customer calls and books jobs. On its electrical page, ServiceTitan reports 17 percent average revenue growth and a 6 percent average increase in close rates. Results will vary, of course, especially if your current system is a whiteboard and a very good memory.

So, should you trade in the horse?

Not all at once. The contractors who did well in the 1920s did not sell every horse on Monday. They bought one truck, learned what it was good for, and kept going.

The same playbook works here. Pick the task that eats most of your evenings, whether that is takeoffs, chasing invoices, or writing daily logs, and try one tool on it. Check every AI draft before it goes to a customer, a supplier, or an inspector. AI is fast and confident, and it is sometimes confidently wrong, a bit like a first year apprentice with a brand new tool belt.

The license, the judgment, and the responsibility stay with you. The paperwork, increasingly, does not have to.
